    It was definitley residue from a former oven cleaner as most of them are ammonia based and the fumes can be toxic.. Wipe it down with some dawn and water and then put some lemon juice in a pan and simmer it for a few minutes and then put it inside and close the door. It will absorb the smell of the ammonia from the oven cleaNer and smell fresh and clean again
